What is the point of reading the Bible?

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “It makes no sense and seems completely over my head.” Maybe try a friendlier translation.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “I’m not sure if the dates match up, such and such was the actual author or events follow scientific laws.” Research more about the purpose and style of ancient Hebrew writing. Well that and the one who made scientific law is also free to bypass them whenever he chooses.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “If that were me, I wouldn’t have messed up the way some of those people did.” Strong in you, the dark-pride is.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “I just don’t see why the Jews did the opposite of what God told them to do over and over?” You have much to learn young grasshopper.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “It mainly teaches good moral lessons of what and what not to do.” You are still missing the boat.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “It’s about salvation for humanity.” You’ve hit a major theme, but are missing the foundation.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “I should try to be more like the heroes.” Not a bad start, but dig deeper.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “Man, people really did some sick, twisted things back then; even the good guys.” You’re getting warmer.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “I can really begin to see how the things in here apply to life today.” You are growing in understanding.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “I can see aspects of myself in the worst, most despicable people and actions mentioned throughout it.” Oh you are really unto something now.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “Oh God, I can’t believe you’ve put up with all of us for this long! I acknowledge I’m just as terrible as any other person I could point a finger at from the past or right now!” This is the beginning of wisdom my friend.

If you read the bible and walk away saying, “Now that I truly see the need for salvation, I feel led to demonstrate the same forgiveness and acts of compassion towards every other person as you’ve shown me; including those I hate the most.” Congratulations, you are well on your way to being a true disciple of Jesus Christ.
