As Christ Loves Us (poem)

While in undergrad, one of my philosophy professors gave students the option of choosing some form of artistic expression instead of completing a term paper; as long as we demonstrated a strong understanding of the covered material. The following poem was part of a collection turned in reflecting differing types of Christian ideologies.

As Christ Loves Us

Where is the love in a world

Teeming with hate

Is it really ever present?

But dark forces negate

The bonds we can share

And God’s work we can do

He won’t work through just me,

But requires also you

We must all come together,

As one we must reconcile

We must heal this wound of separation

That has been bleeding, for quite a while

for…

As Christ loves us, we should love each other

Unify and strengthen one another

Open our hearts to the lost and confused

Cover with kindness, don’t suffocate with views

Must nation rise against nation?

Must we continue to go to war?

With the money we spend on armies

We could have fed a billion poor

But do not be deceived

Though bullets physically kill

Just the same mentally and emotionally,

Words also will

A spirit can be lifted

By the words that are sung

For “Life and death

Are in the power of the tongue”

We should encourage each other

In all that we say

Anyone we offend with words

Is a soul that may get away

so…

As Christ loves us, we should love each other

Unify and strengthen one another

Open our hearts to the lost and confused

Cover with kindness, don’t suffocate with views

We need to reach out

And extend our hands

Have cares for others

Far beyond our lands

There are saints far and wide

On the Gold and Ivory Coasts

But other saints are not the ones

Who need our help the most

We are here to help all people

Whether saved or not

We account to God for sin

So we should judge not

For in the eyes of God

We are all sinners

A twelve year saint is no more saved,

Than a one week beginner

The heavens will celebrate,

Even the salvation of one, solely

We need to find the next soul to save

Instead of claiming we’re the most Holy

because…

As Christ loves us, we should love each other

Unify and strengthen one another

Open our hearts to the lost and confused

Cover with kindness, don’t suffocate with views

We all have drowned in sin

God’s grace keeps us afloat

Will you rescue sins’ next victim

Or escape in your own boat?

Love is far more powerful

Than anything we could ever face

Love is like shoes on your feet

While running a barefoot race

Always show the love of the Father

To those who don’t agree with you

Pray also for their salvation,

Not just against what they do

The central theme of this message

I will continue to resound

If you’ve yet to fully catch on,

This time I’ll break it down

See…

As Christ loves us, we should love each other

Don’t condemn and alienate the unwed mothers

Unify and strengthen one another

Despite our petty differences, we’re all sisters and brothers

Open our hearts to the lost, and confused

We need to help the abusers, not just the abused

Cover with kindness, don’t suffocate with views

For this my brethren, is how to spread the “Good News”
